Makes 2 large loaves of Turkish Bread or 8 Turkish Bread Rolls
Turkish Bread is good for so many things. Like served warm with your favourite dips, or toasted and eaten as a sandwich or even just eaten as is!
Traditionally, Turkish bread is cooked in a hot clay oven and obviously not everyone has one of these around. This Easy Turkish Bread recipe will blow you away with how quick and easy it is to make with just a handful of ingredients! I personally love to toast these for my Chicken Tandoori Sandwiches.
- 500g bread flour, sifted (plain flour is fine to use)
- 1 sachet dried yeast (7g)
- 1 tsp caster sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- Olive oil to grease and to brush over the bread
- 2-3 tsp sesame seeds
- If you can get nigella seeds about 1 tsp (I couldn’t find any but I would have used them)

- Combine the yeast, flour, sugar, and salt in the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment. Make a well in the center and add the water.
- Turn the mixer on to low and let it mix and knead for 10 minutes. You may need to scrape the sides if there’s excess flour still on the sides of the bowl.
- Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl and gently move it around so it’s lightly coated with the oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in a warm place to double in size, about 1- 1/2 hours.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into half. (If you want individual rolls, just divide each half into 4.) Flatten out slightly with your hands and place them onto 2 separate sheets of baking paper. With flour on your hands, stretch the dough out into a rectangle shape that’s no longer or wider than your baking tray.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and place in a warm spot for 20 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 230ºc with a baking tray on the middle shelf. (We need to get the baking tray hot before placing the bread on it.)
- Using your finger, or the end of a wooden spoon dipped in flour, poke some holes over the bread so that you end up with some pools of olive oil.
- Brush over a generous amount of olive oil (Not swimming in oil though). You’ll only use about 1 1/2 tbsp overall. Then sprinkle over sesame seeds, nigella seeds if using and some salt flakes.
- Once the oven and baking tray are both preheated, carefully slide on 1 batch of the bread and bake for about 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack and then place the next batch into the oven straight away.
